This one-on-one programme uses architecture as a tool for developing higher-order thinking — spatial awareness, creative reasoning and problem-solving through design. Students do not simply learn about buildings; they learn to think structurally, to analyse context, and to turn ideas into well-formed concepts.

Through real design work, they learn to approach tasks the way architects, inventors and cultural innovators think: by observing, modelling, experimenting and presenting ideas clearly and confidently. Alongside early portfolio preparation, they gain something more important — a mindset that combines creativity with logic and independent judgment, valuable in any future academic or professional path.

The programme is taught personally by Alexander Novikov — architect, founder of the Architectural Thinking School and participant of the Venice Biennale — giving families rare access to professional-level design thinking at an early age.

Alexander Novikov

Architect, founder, and head of the Architectural Thinking School for Children, where he also teaches. He received his M.Arch. degree from the Belarusian National Technical University in 2005 and a postgraduate degree from the Strelka Institute for Media, Architecture and Design in 2012. He has previously worked for Totan Kuzembaev Architecture Office, ADM Architects, ABD Architects, and is currently a partner at Karako Architectural Studio. He is also the author of HOUSEДОМДОМ: A Book of Children's Projects and Other Avant-Garde Architecture. He is the founder of Foreign Pavilion and projects curator for the Venice Art Biennale 2024 and Architecture Biennale 2025. He also creates lectures and educational videos on architecture for children and parents. In 2021, he was nominated for the Inspire Future Generations Award (Thornton Education Trust) as the Individual of the Year.

Programme Structure

(Trial class + 6 individually guided sessions)

Each student follows a personalised journey through six steps of architectural thinking:
TRIAL
Orientation & Creative Activation
A first look into how architects observe, analyse and generate ideas. The student tries a small creative task and we define their interests and current level.
STEP 1
Contemporary Vision
Understanding how today’s architects think and work. The student begins to analyse real buildings as design ideas, not just as forms.
STEP 2
Tradition & Vernacular Intelligence
Exploring how local cultures and materials shape architecture. The student learns to connect design with context and intention.
STEP 3
Natural Logic & Structures
Discovering why nature is the strongest architect. We break down natural forms to understand structure, repetition and logic.
STEP 4
Global Cultural Exposure
Looking inside major architectural exhibitions such as the Venice Architecture Biennale. The student learns to see design as part of global culture.
STEP 5
Concept Development
Turning an idea into an architectural concept. The student begins their own small project — a house or pavilion — through sketching and conceptual modelling.
STEP 6
Digital Project & Presentation
Finalising the concept through SketchUp modelling and preparing the project for presentation — a first portfolio-style result.

Knowledge and skills students will gain

By the end of the programme, your child will:

  • develop an early portfolio mindset
  • strengthen creative and spatial thinking
  • learn to analyse architecture, not only look at it
  • gain exposure to contemporary global design
  • practice conceptual sketching and design logic
  • complete a small architectural project from idea to model
  • build confidence in expressing original ideas

Testimonials

  • My 11-year-old son took private architecture classes with Alexander, and it has been a truly wonderful experience for him. Daniel especially enjoyed learning about different building designs from around the world — the fascinating stories, challenges, and ideas behind each project captured his imagination. He always left each session inspired and excited to learn more.

For us, the most valuable part was how thoughtfully the lessons were tailored. Alexander combined theory, real-world examples, and engaging hands-on projects, creating a perfect balance that kept Daniel both interested and motivated.

I’ve also noticed clear, positive changes. He’s become more confident — especially when he recognizes a building and shares its story with us. He’s more curious, more expressive with his ideas, and more eager to explore the world around him. His thinking has become more flexible and creative, and he’s developed a deeper interest in every subject he encountered during the classes.

Overall, these lessons have been incredibly meaningful. Alexander created such an engaging, supportive atmosphere, and we are truly grateful for the impact he has had on Daniel.

  • We really appreciate Alexander’s highly professional approach — both in teaching and communication. Everything is clear, structured, and very well-organized. It’s especially important for us that Alexander manages to truly engage the child: Nikolas always looks forward to the lessons and wants to continue. The way the material is presented is competent and very helpful for his project work.

The most valuable thing for us is that Nikolas is always ready and motivated to study, and he has never refused a lesson. He goes to each class with interest and confidence, and this is the best indication that the lessons are beneficial and enjoyable for him.

  • My son (13 y.o.) was genuinely impressed by the Architectural Thinking course by Alexander. Two week sessions in and my son already learned to see patterns and develop his own design.

The course is carefully crafted and is really progressive and informative with a lot of hands-on activities and skills applicable way beyond architecture. Alexander is an amazing tutor, as he is empathic and sensitive to the child’s needs and possesses sharp vision in terms of skills that need to be developed or topics that need to be covered at the moment.

Alexander never criticises but iterates focusing on the child’s strengths building a solid foundation.

Considerate approach to one-on-one mentoring is of great value to a teen who seeks support and confidence and looks into pursuing the path of an architect or just is eager to learn to view the world differently. The course is fully comprehensible and adaptable to my child’s needs.

Along the way the child enriches his own context beyond architecture and design, develops the skills of divergent thinking, creative thinking and problem-solving, as well as gets a valuable perspective on how global world challenges, climate and nature, culture, art, science, and architecture intersect in design and life.

    During the course my son
⁃ Was specifically impressed by Venice Architecture Biennale overview discussing the current world trends
⁃ Learned to analyse the impact of natural and cultural environments on architectural design, plan architectural space by applying design principles, and as a result developed his sketches and implemented his design in 3D model in Sketchup the way he saw it.
    - Was so fascinated with the fruits architecture session that now he is looking to create his own roof design with a bell pepper structure.

As a result, he is currently working on his own portfolio and sketching more during free time.

  • I had a year of architecture lessons. It was a lot of fun for me, and in the end I learned a lot, too. I finished with a huge project and gained a lot of knowledge about architecture. I can only be grateful for all those lessons I had, and I can wholeheartedly recommend Alexander to anyone who is new to, or already a bit advanced in, architecture.

  • Alexander is an amazing tutor that I am staying with for many years. I was able to take the course at my own pace while Alexander provided me with great support along the way. Despite my ADD and difficulties in concentrating I was never bored or tired, as Alexander was very responsive to my needs.

We started with a discussion of Architecture Biennale and disputed over the meaning and context of pavilions of different countries, as well as analysed the impact of culture, climate and geography of different countries on architecture.

I was also introduced to architectural foundations, captured the buildings of world-famous architects and learned what stands behind their design, and now feel more confident in designing my own structures. Creating a project like an architect is an unforgettable experience.

What’s more, I am now able to see patterns and geometry, while the sketching exercises trained my eye for proportions. My spatial skills got so much better!

I was especially excited to sketch the design of my own architectural building the way I see it and model it using Sketchup. I’m already thinking of a new design and planning to create my portfolio!

  • Why families choose this programme

This mentoring format is chosen by internationally minded families who value culture, independent thinking and future-oriented education.

The programme is led by Alexander Novikov — architect and curator of the Foreign Pavilion at the Venice Art Biennale 2024 and Architecture Biennale 2025 — which gives students a rare opportunity to learn from a practicing architect working directly within the global professional context.

  • This programme is ideal for students who:

    • are curious about how the world is designed, not only how it looks
    • enjoy thinking independently and exploring ideas
    • want to learn how to create projects, not just complete tasks
    • may later apply to creative / design-oriented schools or universities
    • benefit from personalised attention and a mentor rather than a group format
  • This programme is not the right fit if:

    • the family is looking for a casual hobby-class without depth
    • the child prefers passive learning rather than self-expression
    • the goal is only entertainment, not growth or authorship
  • Why one-on-one matters

Group classes develop skills in parallel.

    Mentoring develops skills in depth.

In a one-on-one format, the student receives direct feedback at every stage of the process, learns to justify design decisions, and gradually builds independence in thinking — something that group lessons or pre-recorded courses cannot provide.

Architecture here is not the subject, but the medium through which the child learns to reason, create and present.
